What we cover in your health check

Every personal financial health check is tailored to your situation. We look at income, outgoings, savings, pensions, and tax efficiency to help you make better decisions and meet your goals.

Income and Tax Review

Check you're using all available allowances and not paying more tax than you need to.

Savings and Emergency Fund

Assess whether you have enough set aside and where best to keep it.

Pension Planning

Review contributions, forecast what you might retire on, and explore options to top up.

Goal Setting and Cash Flow

Map out what you want to achieve and build a realistic plan to get there.

What happens during a personal financial health check

A financial health check is a structured conversation about your money. We look at what's coming in, what's going out, what you've saved, what you owe, and what you want to achieve in the next few years. It's not about selling you products or pushing you into investments. It's about giving you a clear, honest view of where you stand and what you can do to improve it.

We start by asking questions about your income, regular bills, debt, and any savings or pensions you have. Then we walk through your tax position to make sure you're using your personal allowance, ISA limits, and pension relief properly. If you're self-employed or run a small business, we'll also check whether you're claiming everything you're entitled to and whether your current structure still makes sense.

Most people leave a health check with at least one action they can take straight away to save money or reduce stress.

More information

Common concerns we address include whether you're overpaying tax, whether your emergency fund is big enough, and whether you're on track for retirement. We also discuss life changes like buying a home, starting a family, or winding down work, and how those affect your finances. If you've had a pay rise, inheritance, or redundancy, a health check helps you make the most of it.

We work with individuals across Cardiff, Barry, Penarth, and the Vale of Glamorgan. Many of our clients are sole traders, freelancers, or small business owners who want to separate their personal and business finances more clearly. Others are employees who've never had a proper financial review and want to know if they're doing the right things.

What you'll walk away with

  • A written summary of your current financial position
  • Specific actions to improve your tax efficiency, savings, or pension
  • Clarity on what you can afford and what your priorities should be
  • Follow-up support if you want help implementing any recommendations

There's no obligation to become an ongoing client. Some people book a health check once a year as a financial MOT. Others use it as a starting point for longer-term planning or tax advice. Either way, you'll leave with a clearer sense of what to do next and why it matters.

Pension Planning Advice

Before you book

Here's what people usually want to know before booking a personal financial health check in Cardiff.

How long does a financial health check take?
Usually between 45 minutes and an hour. We can do it face-to-face in Cardiff, over the phone, or on a video call, whichever works best for you.
What do I need to bring?
Bring details of your income, regular outgoings, savings accounts, pensions, and any debts. Payslips, bank statements, and your last tax return (if you have one) are helpful but not essential.
Is the initial consultation really free?
Yes. The first health check is completely free with no obligation. If you want ongoing support or more detailed tax planning after that, we'll talk through options and fees.
Do you give financial advice or just information?
We give practical, tailored guidance based on your situation. We're accountants, not independent financial advisers, so we focus on tax, structure, and cash flow rather than investment products.
Can you help if I'm employed rather than self-employed?
Absolutely. We work with employees who want to check their tax code, maximise pension contributions, or plan around a bonus or inheritance.
What happens after the health check?
You'll get a written summary and clear next steps. Some clients come back annually for a refresh, others move on to regular bookkeeping or tax return services. It's entirely up to you.
Do you cover pensions and retirement planning?
We review your pension contributions, check you're getting tax relief, and forecast what you might retire on. For detailed investment advice, we can refer you to a qualified IFA if needed.
