How we build forecasts that actually help

Financial modelling is about turning your business plan into numbers you can trust. We take your historical accounts, your goals for the next 12 to 36 months, and the realities of your market, then build a spreadsheet model that shows revenue, costs, cash flow and profit under different scenarios. It is particularly useful for Cardiff businesses considering expansion, hiring, new premises or applying for funding.

We start with a conversation about where you want to go. Then we gather your past financial data, build the three core statements (income, balance sheet, cash flow), and layer in your assumptions around sales growth, pricing, staffing and overheads. The result is a living document you can update as conditions change.

A good model does not predict the future. It helps you prepare for it.

More information

Once the model is built, we walk you through it. You will see how sensitive your profit is to changes in sales volume, what happens to cash if a big customer pays late, and whether you can afford that extra member of staff in Q3. We also build in scenario testing so you are not caught out if things do not go exactly to plan.

Many of our clients use their model to secure finance. Lenders and investors want to see that you have thought through the numbers, and a well-structured forecast makes those conversations much easier. We have supported businesses across Cardiff and South Wales through growth funding applications, and the model often becomes the backbone of the business case.

What is included

  • Historical data review and assumption-setting session
  • Three-statement model in Excel (income statement, balance sheet, cash flow)
  • Sensitivity analysis and scenario planning (best case, base case, worst case)
  • Walkthrough meeting to explain the model and how to use it
  • One round of revisions as your assumptions evolve

We also offer ongoing support to update your model quarterly or when major decisions arise. Financial forecasting is not a one-off exercise. It works best when it evolves with your business, helping you stay on track and adjust course when needed.

Before we start

Here's what South Wales business owners usually ask before we build their first model.

How long does it take to build a financial model?
Typically two to three weeks from our first meeting to final delivery. That includes gathering your data, building the model, and a walkthrough session where we explain how it works.
What information do you need from me?
Your last two to three years of accounts if available, details of any loans or finance agreements, your sales pipeline or customer contracts, and a clear view of your growth plans. We will guide you through exactly what we need in our kick-off call.
Can I update the model myself later?
Yes. We build models in Excel with clear documentation so you or your team can update assumptions and see results in real time. We are also happy to handle updates for you on a quarterly or ad-hoc basis.
Do I need this if I'm not looking for funding?
Not necessarily, but many businesses find it useful for internal planning. If you are hiring, moving premises, launching a new product line or just want confidence in your cash flow, a model gives you that clarity.
What's the difference between this and a budget?
A budget is usually a single-year plan. A financial model is more dynamic. It links your income statement, balance sheet and cash flow, lets you test scenarios, and projects further ahead, often two to three years.
How much does financial modelling cost?
It depends on complexity, but for most small businesses in Cardiff a tailored three-statement model starts around £1,200 plus VAT. We will give you a fixed quote after our initial conversation.
Will you explain the model in plain English?
Absolutely. We walk you through every assumption, every formula, and what each scenario means for your business. You will leave the session understanding not just what the numbers say, but why.
Can you model multiple scenarios, like opening a second location?
Yes. Scenario planning is one of the most valuable parts of the service. We can model new locations, additional staff, product launches, or changes in pricing, and show you the impact on cash and profit.
