Getting your business off the ground

Starting a business in Cardiff means navigating HMRC registration, choosing the right structure, and setting up systems that won't trip you up six months down the line. We work with sole traders, partnerships and new limited companies across South Wales, helping you get the foundations right so you can focus on winning customers, not chasing paperwork.

Most of our start-up clients are tradespeople, salon owners, consultants or retailers taking the leap for the first time. You might have a clear vision or still be working things out. Either way, we'll sit down with you, talk through your plans in plain English, and build a roadmap that covers structure, registration, cash flow forecasting, and the practical side of staying compliant.

We set you up properly from the start, so you don't have to unpick mistakes later.

More information

Our process starts with a free consultation where we get to know your business idea, your goals, and your current situation. We'll advise on whether sole trader or limited company makes sense for you, what registrations you need, and how to handle tax from day one. Then we help you choose and set up accounting software, build a realistic financial forecast, and register everything with HMRC and Companies House if required.

One of the biggest concerns we hear is cash flow. Many new businesses underestimate how long it takes to get paid, or how much working capital they'll need before revenue starts flowing. We build forecasts that account for quiet months, late payers, and the costs people forget like insurance, software subscriptions, and your own drawings. It's not about scary spreadsheets. It's about knowing your numbers well enough to make confident decisions.

What's included

  • Initial consultation to discuss your idea and structure options
  • Guidance on sole trader vs limited company, including tax implications
  • HMRC registrations: self-assessment, corporation tax, PAYE, VAT if needed
  • Companies House incorporation and statutory filings for limited companies
  • Accounting software setup and training (Xero, QuickBooks, FreeAgent)
  • Cash flow forecasting and financial projections for your first year
  • Ongoing support as questions come up in those early months

We know the Cardiff business landscape. Whether you're opening a salon in Whitchurch, running a trade business out of Penarth, or consulting from a co-working space in the city centre, we understand the local market, typical costs, and the kinds of challenges South Wales startups face. You're not getting generic advice copied from a website. You're getting someone who knows what it's like to build a business here.

Starting up is exciting, but it's also overwhelming. Our job is to take the pressure off the financial and compliance side so you can concentrate on doing what you're good at. Once you're trading, we're still here for your bookkeeping, payroll, tax returns, and anything else that comes up as you grow.

Company Formation & Incorporation

Before you start

These are the questions we hear most from people starting their first business in Cardiff and South Wales.

Do I need to be a limited company or can I start as a sole trader?
It depends on your circumstances. Sole trader is simpler and cheaper to run, but limited company can offer tax savings and liability protection once you're earning more. We'll talk through the pros and cons based on your situation and help you decide.
How much does it cost to set up a business with your help?
Our start-up advice package starts from £350 plus VAT, covering initial consultation, structure advice, registrations, and software setup. We'll give you a fixed quote after our first chat so there are no surprises.
What do I need to bring to the first meeting?
Just an outline of your business idea, any costings or research you've done, and a rough sense of when you want to start trading. We'll guide you through everything else.
How long does it take to get everything registered and ready?
For sole traders, you can often start trading straight away and register for self-assessment afterwards. Limited companies take around one to two weeks to incorporate, then we handle HMRC registrations. We move as fast or slow as you need.
Will you help me apply for start-up funding or loans?
We don't arrange funding directly, but we'll prepare the financial forecasts and business plan documents lenders or investors want to see. If you're applying through Business Wales or a bank, we'll make sure your numbers stack up.
Do you only work with certain types of businesses?
We work with most small businesses and sole traders, especially trades, retail, salons, clinics, and professional services. If your sector is very specialised, we'll let you know during the consultation whether we're the right fit.
What happens after I've registered and started trading?
Most start-up clients move onto our bookkeeping, payroll or tax return services once they're up and running. You're not locked in, but we're here when you need us and we already know your business.
Can you help if I've already started trading but never registered properly?
Yes. We help people regularise their position with HMRC all the time. The sooner you get it sorted, the better. Book a consultation and we'll work out what needs doing.
